Downton started the pre-season testing in strong form after setting the quickest time in the first two hour test session. The 2022 Formula Virtual season is upon us with the first of three days of pre-season testing. Held at Jerez, the teams and drivers were welcomed with mild and sunny conditions. Downton, whom have won four of the last five Constructor World Championships were the quickest. Matteo Zetticci was quick to settle in to the BD10 and put any doubts aside that the team has lost any of it's edge over the winter break. However Zetticci's time on the soft tyre compound came later in the day when the track was better rubbered in. Close behind was Sebastien Vocquelin in the Mathershaw Porsche who was also on the soft tyre. The Frenchman's time came much earlier in the session and continued to set consistently strong times throughout. Felix Perez was third fastest for FIRST, albeit a second down on Zetticci on the same tyre compound. Reigning World Champion, Nathaniel Powers, got his first chance to drive for his new team and was fourth quickest for Lucas on the hard tyre compound. Yakumi Takahashi showed promise for Arrow with fifth fastest on the medium tyre. The Japanese driver did his fastest time early in the session which suggests the German team could go even quicker. James Thompson was sixth fastest for Phoenix on the hard tyre compound, however did make a few trips in to the gravel suggesting that the car might have some handling issues. The Lopez team was seventh quickest with Victor Ostberg behind the wheel fitted with the medium tyres. The Swedish driver lost a lot of time after losing control and crashing in to the barriers half way through the test. Nikolai Milkovich was next for Ingram on the hard tyres. Giani Ledesma was ninth fastest for Meteor, however was on the soft tyres and the car seemed to be lacking a lot of downforce through corners. Franklin and Danilo Forini seemed to struggle for raw pace with the tenth best time overall with the mediums fitted. Raj Sharma and Hunter Ryan were next driving the AMR and Ocelot respectively. Both drivers were fitted with the hard tyre compound. Alexander McLaughlin was 13th quickest for Highwind also with the Hard tyres. It was a disaster of a test session for both North Star and Westwood. Brock Kidd failed to set a time after crashing in to the wall when leaving the pits, and thus damaged the car to much to complete any laps. Jochem van Snelheid had a torrid time as he was unable to leave the pits at all with mechanical troubles with the new Peugeot powered Westwood. Test day two will continue tomorrow. Full times below.
