The 2022 Formula Virtual season will feature a few rule changes and additions. Below we break down exactly what they are and what it means for the teams, drivers, and fans. Blue Flags Abolished
One of the biggest rule change for 2022 is that blue flags will no longer feature. This means drivers who are about to be unlapped will no longer be required to make way for a leading driver. The FVA acknowledged this rule change is a risk as it could create problems for lead battles, but also have hope that it will create less incidents between front runners and back markers. The shortening of the race distance will also help minimize the amount of about to be lapped back markers. The teams overwhelmingly voted 'yes' to this rule change and it will certainly be one to keep an eye on. Three Tyre Compounds The Super Soft tyre has been removed for this year. The Soft, Medium, and Hard will now be the only three choices teams can make. While this means teams have one less strategic choice, it is believed it should create closer races especially with the race distance shorter. Pre-Qualifying To Feature Five Teams The bottom five teams in the championship (the bottom five from 2021 for the first five rounds) will be required to compete in Pre-Qualifying for 2022. This means ten drivers will be competing and only the fastest six will make their way through to qualify for the race. Lower Ride Height And Sparks Cars will be required to be much closer to the ground throughout the season. A consequence of this will mean sparks will be produced from the cars and should create a visual spectacle. Street Circuits.. Finally For the first time in Formula Virtual history - teams and drivers will race on street circuits this year. Adelaide and Detroit will make their debuts on the calendar this year and is sure to be a challenge for drivers and teams alike.
