After a successful inaugural campaign in the 2023 Formula Virtual season, Toyota Kōwhai Racing look forward to the 2024 campaign kicking off in Adelaide in April 2024. With the season concluded we are pleased to announce our driver lineups for the upcoming season.
Marcus Thunder will return to the #31 car for the 2024 season after starting every race this season, something no other driver from the three debutant teams or Lamborghini were able to achieve. The 28-year-old Brit achieved a best result of two 17th place finishes across the season, demonstrating consistency and dependability that helped the team develop our 2023 and 2024 cars across the season. Thunder will be joined by a familiar face to him, 23-year-old Swede and former Lucas teammate, Maximilian Thunström. Thunström comes with plenty of proven raw pace and talent, as 14 race wins across 5 seasons in FV3, FV2 and VWRS saw him labelled a future star at the age of just 20. Thunström’s reputation only increased with a win in his rookie season at the United States V-Prix, but unfortunately saw his career derailed by the sudden departure of Lucas V-Prix midway through the 2022 season. Thunström has been absent from racing since then but is expected to drive for eVirtual’s reigning champions Formation Competition over the off-season, giving him plenty of race experience to prepare for a return to Formula Virtual. Outside of the Formula Virtual team Toyota Kōwhai Racing will be looking to extend the contracts of both reserve driver Dominykas Zvironas and academy driver Dani de la Fuente. Both have been great assets to the team, with Dominykas putting in great work behind the scenes to push our team forward and Dani mounting a title challenge in the VARS series. Toyota Kōwhai Racing would also like to give a heartfelt thank you to departing driver Hunter Ryan, who achieved the team’s highest race finish over the course of a season on loan from Ocelot Japan Racing, and wish him well for his future career. Alex Tunnicliffe, Team Principal: Here at Toyota Kōwhai Racing we have been extremely pleased with the progress made in our first season. Our driver signing announcement today builds on this progress, we have been ambitious in our driver recruitment and we are very fortunate to have both Marcus and Maximilian who believe in our project and will help us to drive this team forward and bring success to Kiwi motorsport.
