Kōwhai Racing have been confirmed as a new entrant to Formula Virtual for 2023. It has been announced that Toyota Kōwhai Racing will join Formula Virtual starting from the 2023 season. This will mark the first time in the series history in which a team has competed under a New Zealand license. Alex Tunnicliffe will oversee the project as the team principle. The New Zealander himself is currently employed at AMR as their deputy team principle. It was also revealed that Kōwhai Racing will use the numbers 31 and 32.
"Everyone here at the factory is super thrilled to have our entry confirmed into FV for next season, personally it has been a long held ambition of mine so really proud to have been able to get to this point. The hard work starts here though, the competition is fierce in this championship and we look forward to fighting our way up through the field. Massive thanks to Toyota too for helping this project come together, we couldn't do it without them and we are really thankful for the support they've shown us. Obviously our VWRS season hasn't gone the way we had wanted it to so far but Toyota have seen the long term vision we have and it is great to have them onboard with that", said Alex Tunnicliffe (team owner). It was also confirmed that Toyota would be supplying the team with engines. This will mark the first time Toyota have competed in the sport. There is still uncertainty around the future of Honda in the sport, but if they remain we could see two Japanese engine manufactures compete in Formula Virtual next year. "Toyota is happy to announce our financial support of Kōwhai Racing as they make the step up into Formula Virtual. Toyota has long had a great relationship with motorsport in New Zealand and we are keen to further that by helping support NZ's first Formula Virtual team. We look forward to a successful future with Kōwhai Racing", said a Toyota spokesperson. "I am thrilled to see Alex Tunnicliffe spearhead his own team for the 2023 season. Alex has been around the Formula Virtual paddock for many years now so it is an exciting time to give him this opportunity. He has shown his commitment to the sport with the help of running AMR and I'm sure Kōwhai Racing will be a worthy addition to the grid starting from next year", said Nic Morley. This news comes just hours after it was revealed Sven Schubert would be taking charge of the Porsche team. Now it remains to be seen which other team might be picked as a new entrant for 2023.
