After yet another turbulent week at BMPS Scuderia Meteor, many of the team’s major sponsors have pulled their backing. The news will come as no surprise given the mounting pressures at the team. Having qualified for just six races since dropping into Pre-Qualifying in early 2020, the Italian team has endured a dire three years under the Caliri ownership. Legal battles, money problems, driver chaos, senior staff being suspended and now outbursts in front of the media. These are just some of the problems that have happened for the team in the last year and it seems to be only the very tip of the iceberg. Finally, sponsors have had enough of the charade and have pulled out, one by one. ITA Airways, Benetton, FILA and Alessi have all announced a separation from the Italian team, with the possibility of more to follow. BMPS, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, so far remain as title sponsor. Recently leaked images of the SM221B appear to show the car looking much barer with just Pallini appearing as a major sponsor and some hastily added Scuderia Meteor logos in the place of previous sponsors. This latest development has left the team in even more hot water with engine supplier Lamborghini. The Italian marque have made it known that if things do not turn around imminently, they will remove their engine supply deal.
