Formula Virtual driver Sergio Alvarez will miss the Italian V-Prix due to the injuries that the Argentine sustained in his crash at the Belgian V-Prix, his team have confirmed. Alvarez was running in sixteenth when Will Hoskins spun his FIRST around on the exit of turn nine and re-joined the track in front of the Argentine. Alvarez seemed to see Hoskins quite late after exiting the corner and was forced to drastically swerve to avoid hitting the Brit. This sent Alvarez into the barrier at a high speed, destroying his car. His team, Royal Phoenix Motorsport, confirmed he’ll miss the next race via a statement on their website. “Unfortunately, we can confirm that Sergio is not in a position to race at the Italian V-Prix. Sergio sustained some quite nasty cuts and bruises when his car impacted the barrier; sending debris into the cockpit. The main injuries, though, are to Sergio’s neck and head from the wheel which hit him on the head quite heavily. Sergio is doing okay, but these things cannot be rushed and the safety of our drivers will always take precedence over any sporting agendas. It is, however, a testament to the quality of the current FV cars that Sergio hasn’t sustained worse injuries. We would once again like to publicly send our thanks to the medical team at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and the hospital in Liege where Sergio was airlifted to. We would also like to thank Will [Hoskins] and Adam Blocker whose first concern after the incident was the condition of Sergio.” Above: The onboard shot which clearly shows the nasty impact of the wheel on Alvarez's helmet.
This of course means that Phoenix’s stand-in driver, Dominic Hanson, will presumably be called upon. As per the FVA rules; only three drivers may represent a team throughout the course of the season. As Phoenix have already used their quota of drivers, Hanson is the only option for the Mancunian team.
