Elroy Wagner's replacement at the Lopez FV Team has been confirmed this evening, as the Swiss outfit announcing that Sergio Álvarez has signed for the team for the 2022 season. The 28 year old Argentine driver will depart Phoenix Motorsport after 4 seasons. He represented the team in their first race, which was also his Formula Virtual debut. He's also been able to battle with teams like North Star and Lopez for the minor points scoring placings over the previous seasons, however his performance at a sodden Malaysian V-Prix in 2018, which only saw 8 drivers greet the checkered flag. He may have fallen just a few hundered metres short of P4 due to an engine failure, but on that day he announced himself as a driver who wasn't going to come and go from the sport, unlike many others over the years.
"I owe the world and then some to Alex, Christian, and the whole team who were always buzzing to be here in FV, through the highs and lows. But now is the right time for me to start the next chapter in my career," said Álvarez. "There is a lot of momentum at Lopez as well, not just results, but also a very strong, positive working community. I cannot wait to start working with them next year. It's an exciting future ahead of me but for now my focus is on getting my season back on track and finishing my time with Phoenix on a high." "We've followed Sergio's progress, particularly from the days he started beating us to the minor points placings over the past few seasons," Dylan Lopez told the media. "When Elroy revealed to us that he would retire some time before it was announced about a month ago, Sergio was one of the first names to go up on the whiteboard as a potential replacement. To have gone on and obtained his signature is fantastic for the team. Even though he is replacing a former World Champion, Sergio is a driver who can extract the maximum out of any car he is given, so he'll be a great asset to us from next season onwards."
