The BMPS Scuderia Meteor Formula Virtual team has been sold, with the sale completed in full. The Scuderia Meteor team has been sold to Italian manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. who have supplied engines to the team in a customer role since 2020. The Italian team has been owned by the Caliri family since 2019 when Piercarlo Caliri bought it from original owner and founder Kazuki Armos. Since then, the team have been hopeless on track and surrounded by controversy in every step of the way. Caliri made the team available for sale some time ago however little interest was shown until recently. It is reported that Lamborghini were undecided on becoming a full works team or remaining in the sport as an engine manufacturer. However, with almost all teams now confirmed with other engine manufacturers for the future, Lamborghini have decided on their status and have completed the purchase of the team from Piercarlo Caliri. The main driving force behind Lamborghini’s presence in virtual motorsport is CEO, Stephan Winkelmann. Winkelmann entered a works Lamborghini team into eVirtual last season and Formula Virtual seems to be the next stage. Aldo De Lucia, the Team Principal for the eVirtual team, has been announced as the CEO of ‘Lamborghini Squadra Corse’ in Formula Virtual and it is rumoured that Shane O’Connell will be reinstated as Team Principal after being suspended by Caliri earlier this year. De Lucia made the short statement: “We cannot say too many details for now, it is all in the early stages. All that can be known so far is that we have completed the purchase of Scuderia Meteor and we, Lamborghini Squadra Corse, will join the Formula Virtual grid as a full works team for 2023.” Now there are questions raised such as the identity of the drivers selected by Lamborghini as well as the main question: can this be the turning point for a team that has endured so much misery since the end of the last decade?
