Italian Formula Virtual team BMPS Scuderia Meteor have revealed their challenger for the 2022 Formula Virtual World Championship via their social media, becoming the second team after Highwind to do so. The team had their worst season to date in 2021, managing just a single race start all season courtesy of Carson Davenport who has now left to become FIRST’s reserve driver and has been replaced by Italian veteran Enzo Domenicalli. The car was slow and heavy, and reportedly lacked any real development over the course of the season due to funding issues. Worryingly, the 2022 car appears to be the 2021 car with a slightly altered colour scheme. No new sponsors have appeared on the car, but a simple black question mark is now positioned where the team logo previously was. Quotes from team members: Deputy Team Principal Guido Caliri: “It is true that times are hard now. We will fight with everything on and off the track. We will not be beaten by people who want to make a name for themselves with false accusations.” Team Principal Shane O’Connell: “We’re very pleased with the work of the livery designer, the car looks beautiful. It’s up to us to find a way to actually make a few more appearances on Sundays this year.” Technical Director Andrea Belli: “For the new season we have the old machine. Is it ideal? No it is not. We work with what we have and hope to get more out of this package with another year of knowledge behind us. The engine, the Lamborghini FV21B, we hope has been adapted from last year for more power to give some chance at certain circuits, we thank Lamborghini for their continuing support.” It remains to be seen if the SM221B is any improvement on the SM221, but rumours are understandably circling regarding the future of the Ancona based team. Whilst other Formula Virtual teams such as AMR and Highwind are pulling themselves out of danger and into the modern world of FV, this once proud team now seems hapless, impoverished, and somewhat amateur. The ongoing off-track distractions do not help but are a mere extra hurdle in the path of the troubled team. Engine manufacturer Lamborghini will likely be growing tired of the seemingly endless dark tunnel of poor results and embarrassing management and so, 2022 must at least give some hope, for everyone’s sake.
