After a disappointing opening race of the season, reigning world champion Enrique Ruiz has topped the practice session on Malaysia. The session also raised a few eyebrows with a shake up of the pecking order and a four second spread of the field. Franklins test driver Luke Stokey filled in for Elroy Wagner and went second quickest albeit three tenths of Ruiz. Liverpool were the next best with Beckenbauer in third while Downton shocked the paddock with fourth and sixth fastest. Adrien Simon and Arden Hutchinson failed to set a lap time after experiencing technical problems, the former having gearbox gremlins and the latter having an engine issue.
The whole session was greeted with hot and sunny weather, although a high chance of thunderstorms loom for qualifying and race day.
