Enrique Ruiz set the fastest time in practice for the United States V-Prix as four different teams filled the top four places while Champions Downton endured their worst Friday of the season in seventh and tenth. Ruiz and Beckenbauer fought for the top spot throughout the session with the former Champion eventually winning out by nearly three tenths of a second. Oleksandr Zozulya got close to joining the battle, ending the session an impressive third just over two hundredths slower than Beckenbauer.
Finn Schnyder and Puccio Giodano also broke into the top five ahead of Adrien Simon - whose run of topping practice was finally ended - with Klaas van Snelheid the lead of the Downton's in seventh place, nearly four and a half tenths off of Ruiz. The Dutchman complained of a lack of grip throughout the session, at one point exclaiming the track, "felt like someone had oiled f***ing ice." Lewis Ellington was a strong eight fastest for Holmqvist ahead of Tumo Kinnumen who made it two Westwood's in the top nine, with Championship leader Nathaniel Powers frustrated by ending up tenth, nearly seven tenths off of the pace. Will Hoskins was a very impressive eleventh quickest ahead of Allar Kangur, who was set to end the session second before a mistake at the end of his final lap. Judson Sikes was disappointed not to be closer to his team mate in thirteenth while Lopez's new recruit for 2018 - Viktor Östberg - drove Elroy Wagner's car and lapped four tenths quicker than the man he will replace, James Harding. His fellow Swede Sebastian Bergkvist endured a miserable session as his Holmqvist failed to turn a wheel following an electrical problem, while Diego Campos - who will compete this weekend in place of Jean Mattson at Ingram in his final race for the team - was buoyed by only lapping a tenth slower than Nikolai Milkovich.
