Nathaniel Powers will join AMR for the 2023 Formula Virtual season, in a move which will also see the Australian outfit take on Downton power for the campaign. Powers had been widely tipped to remain at Lucas for a second season, however when the team vanished from the sport following the Czech Republic V-Prix, those plans were thrown into disarray.
"It's no secret that we're deeply disappointed with how things unfolded this season with Lucas," Downton commented. "And none of more so than Nathaniel himself, the last thing he wants to do is be sat on the side-lines. Alas, things have happened the way they have and we're where we are, and so we set about working how we could best help Nathaniel find himself another seat." "There was of course the discussion to return - but due to how this season unfolded his thirst for a fresh challenge hasn't really been quenched, and we have two very competent drivers who are doing a great job - and so we looked elsewhere. Obviously though, Nathaniel's talent speaks for itself and so he didn't really need much from us, but we were able to support the deal with an engine supply and technical support to AMR, as per the agreement we had with Lucas and the close relationship we have with Phoenix." "AMR are a team I've admired for years. Despite their hardships, they've always fought through and kept themselves going, they're such a formidable team - and I think with Nathaniel leading the charge and some mega technical support, they could be a real force to be reckoned with." Adrian Arnello added; "Firstly, I must thank the team at Jaguar for all their hard work this season with a new team and car - they've been right lads and helped a ton to bring us back to points! It's bittersweet to part ways so soon after just one season together, but I reckon they appreciate that chances like this are few and far between! To have a driver of Nathaniel's calibre, and an engine just as good to boot, was too much of an opportunity to pass up. For sure I'll lose some sleep over what could've been with the Jags, as it's not comfortable just up and going so soon. But tell you what mate, I'll make up for the lost sleep once the Downton rolls into the shop!" It's fair to say the move is a risky one for Powers. AMR are only just starting to build back up since Arnello, Milner and Ronson purchased the team, and to date have had at least one failure to qualify in every season since the grid was expanded beyond 26 cars, but Powers was vocal in making it known he wanted a fresh challenge, he wanted to help bring a new team to the forefront of Formula Virtual - and this is about as a big a challenge as it comes.
