On a potentially historical weekend for the Downton driver, Nathaniel Powers topped the only practice session of the 2021 US V-Prix. He was followed closely by Felix Perez, the Mexican only 4 hundredths behind. With the new cars this year, record breaking lap times were already achieved in practice, which in turn led to almost miniscule gaps between some drivers. Powers and Perez traded fastest laps between each other before they switched over to long runs. The two were followed by Nick Addison, an encouraging sign for Franklin given their one lap struggles. Most of the talk of the day was about Max Meyer, who put in a couple of strong laps to place just 4 thousandth behind Elroy Wagner in 5th, as he looks for his first points since Germany. Wagner's teammate and the two Mathershaw cars were barely separable, while Klaas van Snelheid struggled to match his teammates pace. There were other standout performances too, most noticeably Brock Kidd who almost beat Marcus Thunder to the top ten, giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about along with Perez's performances. Sergio Alvarez got a rare one up on his teammate as Phoenix put in a strong showing in comparison to rivals Ocelot and Ingram, who struggled. Also among the strugglers were Danilo Forini, 13th, and Will Hoskins - race winner here last year - 14th, both well of their teammates. Finn Schnyder and Johan Halvosen - podium finisher here last year - failed to hit the heights of Meyer and Kidd either, while Maximilian Thunstrom continued his usual consistency of being completely inconsistent as he struggled to make the top 20 after his podium in Canada. Elsewhere, Arrow saw both cars struggle to get close to the top 10, but were happy to have a clear advantage over Westwood. At the back, Highwind and Meteor continued to struggle to pose any threat to others.
