Westwood Racing Technology and Puccio Giodano have released a statement regarding the incident they were involved in during the 2020 V-Prix, which saw Giodano and Perez both retire on the opening lap due to a big crash involving numerous cars. Initial replays showed Giodano coming from too far back and hitting the rear of Perez's FIRST, but Westwood say there's more than meets the eye. Lilly Westwood had this to say on the incident:
"Obviously we hate to see cars hit anything, and we're firstly most glad that everybody involved is alright. Puccio himself is a bit banged and bruised around the legs, and has a bit of a sore neck, but is still fit to race next time out. Poor Poochy was immediately on the radio in the moments leading up to the crash, yelling that he had no brakes; clearly in a panic as he said it in his home language. It's awful audio to listen to, and makes my stomach drop whenever I hear it, so we shan't be releasing it to the public. After studying the data, the engineers confirmed that in fact the brake system had suffered a sudden terminal loss of hydraulic pressure, so as soon as he (Giodano) pushed that brake pedal down, it would've gone straight to the floor. We are thoroughly investigating this issue to ensure it never happens again, so we can keep our drivers safe." Meanwhile, the driver in question Puccio Giodano had this to say: "It was so scary. I've had some big accidents, but that is easily one of the worst. You reach speeds over 200 miles per hour on that straight, so when you have no brake, it is a horrible experience. I feared for my life, and let me tell you that really hurt. I'm still quite sore, but I'll be back again once the car is fixed. Lilly won't let anybody drive it even to test right now, and she was straight down to the medical centre as soon as the crash happened. And waited until I was cleared by the medical team. I am truly sorry to anybody in front of me whose races I affected, very much to Felix as there was nothing he could do either. I hope to next race be able to slow down into turn one and enjoy a good race with everyone." This startling development is made more concerning by the looming approach of the Italian V-Prix, another high speed circuit requiring strong brakes. Westwood, who traditionally have performed well at the temple of speed, will be working around the clock to make sure their car is suitable to race and doesn't pose a safety risk regarding the braking system. Only time will tell if they are able to effectively rectify the issue!
