Force Australia have promoted test driver Hiroto Nakumaya to race driver on a race-by-race basis, following incidents occurring to Alaniz during the last two grand prixs.
Following repeat incidents of unawareness during the first two races, Gerard Alaniz has voluntarily stepped down from his racing duties at Force Australia, handing the reins to Japanese test driver Hiroto Nakumaya. ”I haven’t been feeling the greatest over the past two weekends and I have cost the drivers of Liverpool racing valuable championship points because I am not 100% up to the task during the race” he mentioned, with regret. The announcement follows a repeat offence of ignoring blue flag warnings as front runners came by to lap him in both the Malaysian and Australian grand prix events. Private talks with team owner Petersen were thought to be regarding both incidents immediately following both races, and this seems to have been confirmed as he steps down from his racing seat. Nakumaya seemed both excited and hesitant as the news was broken to him late this evening. ”It will be my first grand prix event with a full F1 field and I just hope I do well.” Alaniz will undergo assessment from the team if and when he makes a decision to return to the racing role. He did not elaborate on his problem, stating it was ”a very personal matter”.
