As preparations begin for this weekend’s Austrian V-Prix, Meteor International have announced which driver will make way for the incoming Lewis Ellington. Italian owner Piercarlo Caliri confirmed the decision to the media this morning; “We started with a good car when we took over Meteor from Kazuki. His team did a good job designing the car this season, unfortunately the results were not good enough. Lewis is the missing piece in the puzzle to get better results and it is essential to put in the car at the first opportunity, which is this weekend. Obviously, this means that a pilot loses his seat for the near future, we evaluated Jules and Mario Juan against each other and in the end we decided that Lopez will continue with Meteor for now. However, he knows that his performances must reflect our choice to keep him while Jules will push for the rest of 2019 to get back with us.”
The media then caught up with team principal Shane O’Connell, who was asked about the decision to bring Ellington into the team; “The decision to replace Jules with Lewis was an easy one. Lewis was without a drive after the collapse of Excelsior and we needed a tried and tested driver to bring in some good results in the second half of the year. Ultimately, it was tight between Jules and MJ as to who kept the seat, but MJ just about did enough over the first half of the season to show slightly more worth to us than Simon. Jules is naturally disappointed but understands what is happening and why. This weekend is now a very exciting one for us as it will be our first in full control of the running the team and with Ellington in the car, hopefully this smile will still be on my face after the race.” Ellington, making his return to a Formula Virtual race weekend for the first time since Malaysia, seemed confident in his own abilities; “Let’s not beat around the bush, I’m here with one objective; to beat my teammate, hard. Whether it was gonna be Lopez or Simon, I didn’t care too much. I’ve not properly met either of them yet but I more than anyone know how much of a cut-throat business FV can be, and this is my opportunity to show everyone what I can do. I want to be back in the sport full time from now on and for that to be the case, my first job is to decimate my 2019 teammate, then we go from there.”
