On the eve of the start of the 2020 French V-Prix weekend, former Q1 competitors Westwood and Cheema have announced a deal which will see their drivers Tumo Kinnumen and Karl Beckenbauer swap places for 2021. The Finn will rejoin his old team at Westwood, where he competed in 69 races, while Cheema will be Beckenbauer's 7th team. Both team managers gave their comment on the driver swap:
"We are very glad to sign Karl for next year, it's no secret he's a great driver and so far this season he has excelled on his return. Not only that, but he also has abundance of experience like all our previous drivers, which is still crucial for a team like us. At the same time, I would like to thank Tumo for his services in the last 5 races. While we haven't been 100% happy with our results, it's clear that our drivers have done a brilliant job for most of the part. We do feel that Tumo would also be more happier in Westwood, a team he is well familiar with. With that said, we will continue to support Tumo as before and hope he can continue to show the pace he has in the early races." - Ahmed Cheema, Cheema FV Racing team principal. "I can't express how excited I am to have Tumo returning to the fold. He was an integral part of the team for years, and I made sure he knew the door was always left open for him. To have him back now just feels like our journey has come full circle from a personal and team perspective. Karl has been fantastic this season, and we thank him greatly for his contribution to both the team and wish him all the best in the future. Now we look forwards to 2021 with what is truly a member of the Westwood family back onboard." - Lilly Westwood, Westwood Racing Technology team principal. Westwood currently sit 8th in the standings with 6 points that Puccio Giodano scored in Britain, while Cheema are further back in 11th, yet to break into the top 10. Both teams will skip Q1 in France for the first time this season.
