It's been quite a while since I've been involved in Formula Virtual. 2014 was when I was last contracted in the sport, as a reserve driver for the Franklin team. Since then I've got on with my own thing, albeit continuing to watch the sport that came about a bit too late for me to be successful. But just because I'm not part of a team anymore, doesn't mean I don't have my own opinions.
I was approached by this media outlet to write an opinion piece on the state of Formula Virtual, and I'm going to start us at the end, with the Brazilian V-Prix. It was an interesting race, some incidents, some shocking moments, and an outcome that wasn't necessarily that surprising given the standings going into it. But there was one person that stood out to me during that race for all the wrong reasons. Enrique Ruiz. Who the hell is this guy? I mean seriously, is this guy content with mediocrity or what? He gets overtaken by his team mate at the beginning, then he decides to pit later than everyone else. Does he think he's so quick that he can lap faster on old tyres? He pretty much does nothing all race until both of his competitors, Simon and Klaas hit misfortune and move out of his way, and spends the remaining laps casually following Powers and letting him take home the win and yet another Championship. I thought this guy was supposed to be aggressive on track, I thought he was supposed to be the best, according to all of his fans, but that was an abysmal performance in front of his home crowd, he should be ashamed of himself. The least he could have done was thrown one up the inside...what does he have to lose? Powers knows he has to finish the race, Ruiz knows he has to win, so push the guy, even if you hit him, you're just doing yourself a favour. I'm not condoning intentional hitting of another driver, but try something, don't just coast behind him hoping he has a reliability problem. Absolutely dreadful. So that's who gets Hirvonen's heat this week.
