In a landmark move, the FVA have announced that the size of the starting grid will be expanded from twenty-six to thirty cars from the 2022 season. The maximum amount of cars able to start the race has been twenty-six since the series inception, however due to recent advancements the maximum numbers of cars will now be thirty.
The series expanded it's number of teams for the 2019 season, and thus has been using a Q1 system (also dubbed pre-qualifying) for the past two seasons. This system has allowed fifteen teams to compete in the series even if they wouldn't always make the race. This system will however be abolished next year as it will no longer be needed. "Since we have had sixteen or fifteen teams in Formula Virtual the FVA have always wanted to expand the grid size. It just was not possible a year ago, but now it is. The reduction of the race length and other technical advancements have made this possible. The FVA have researched heavily into this subject since the start of this year and are now very satisfied we can have a thirty car grid moving forward starting from next year". "We have seen in other motor racing series around the world that a large number of cars on the grid can work and does provide a fantastic spectacle to the fans in the crowd or at home watching. It also gives every team and driver the guarantee of being able to prove themselves in every race. The FVA will be working closely with race event organizers to help them and then ensure us their racing tracks are suitable for a larger amount of cars", said Nic Morley. It is not expected there will be any issues with any tracks being able to hold Formula Virtual races because of this announcement. The 2022 race schedule has not yet been finalized or announced, but there is rumored to be a number of changes which include Jerez and Albert Park being dropped. The FVA also confirmed that the number of teams competing in Formula Virtual will not expand beyond fifteen.
