Danilo Forini once again finished practice with the fastest time on the board, while his teammate struggled with an electrical issue that limited his running in a session that saw several drivers hampered by reliability troubles in the Malaysian heat. The Franklin youngster looked rather strong on his long runs, pumping in the laps and quickly finding a nice flow to the lap before changing tyres and going back out on a low fuel load for what would be a timesheet-topping qualifying simulation. Meanwhile his teammate spent half the session in the garage as the team discovered an electrical issue when they tried to send the aussie out. This lack of running may well hurt him in the race, as he was only able to lap just within 8 tenths of Forini, putting him in 11th. Further back Powers was just over two tenths off the top ten, while Lopez backed up their performance from Japan with Wagner and Kangur both just over 3 tenths off of the top time; they ended up 3rd and 4th respectively. Thunder was another driver that showed the opening round had not been a fluke for his team as he finished the session in fifth place, two hundredths back from the nearest Lopez. He found himself rounding out the top five ahead of both Mathershaw Porsches, Klaas Van Snelheid and both FIRST cars, who will be looking for a bit more pace come qualifying tomorrow. A more promising session for Ingram saw Jean Mattson up in 13th, just under 9 tenths off the pace, while his teammate Vasquez lost his practice session to a familiar face for the team in Zozulya. The Ukrainian was only 13 hundredths off of the lead Ingram, but found himself in 17th due to the incredibly close midfield. Thunstrom seemed to struggle to get any solid running, with the car in and out of the garage for most of the session without setting consecutive fast laps, and the North Star once again looked like quite a handful for the drivers. Looking further back, AMR had a tough session, in 20th and 26th with Schnyder and Meyer respectively, while Ryan was only able to get ten minutes of running after a mistake going through turn 5 saw him enter 6 facing the wrong way. This caused a red flag and undoubtedly what will be a long night for the Ocelot mechanics as they rebuild the car for qualifying. Finally, Meteor rounded out the field some 3 tenths off of the nearest car courtesy of Davenport, while Beyer was a further 3 tenths back. See full classification below.
