Although it has been rumored around the paddock for a month or two – there was still a bit of surprise amongst observers when Carson Davenport was revealed to be the team’s new Test & Reserve driver for 2022.
Some key quotes from Blocker and Davenport at included below: Team Principal Adam Blocker: “With no further ado, I’d like to announce that FIRST’s Test and Reserve driver for 2022 will be Carson Davenport. [applause] As most of you are aware, Carson has been in Formula Virtual since the very beginning and has entered every race. Unfortunately, that streak will come to an end next year but we are looking forward to seeing what Carson can contribute to our team. With his wealth of experience across multiple teams in the paddock, he is a natural fit to help provide constructive feedback on our team operations and technical feedback to help develop the car.” Carson Davenport: “Obviously I would prefer to be racing next season. However, its no secret that I have had limited opportunities for next season – which happens to every driver at some point in their career. I am looking forward to being part of one of the top teams in the sport in FIRST, who will likely be the best team I’ve ever been associated with, and helping to contribute to them getting back on the podium more regularly next season.” Asked whether he would miss racing next season, Carson added: “To be fair I haven’t done much racing this season! I expect to do more racing next season, as FIRST have agreed that they will allow me to run in another series – such as touring cars or endurance racing – if an opportunity arises. It’s no secret that I hope to start another race in Formula Virtual one day, but I’d like to do it in a car capable of scoring points. I know that I still have a lot of good racing left in me, and I’m eager to prove it to the right people.” Blocker declined to comment on FIRST’s second driver for 2022, saying that final decisions have yet to be made. There were previous rumors around the paddock that Will Hoskins would not return with the team. Those rumors have neither been confirmed or denied. Likewise, Blocker declined to comment on Stefan Klien’s future with the team, although it is clear he will not be returning as test and reserve driver.
