Enrique Ruiz was the fastest man of the day in a topsy turvy Free Practice session for the South African V-Prix, with the Coca-Cola Porsche Team Mathershaw driver a full four tenths of a second ahead of his nearest competitors. Will Hoskins was second, closely followed by his FIRST team-mate Felix Perez, topping a highly constructive session for the American team. Allar Kangur appeared to be continuing his early season form with fourth position in an extraordinarily tight field. Behind Ruiz, the field spread between 2nd and 28th was less than a second, highlighting the sheer competitiveness of the Formula Virtual field in 2020. Hunter Ryan took fifth place in his Ocelot, while Nathaniel Powers was best of the Downtons in 6th position, with Klaas van Snelheid's 8th place capping a relatively disappointing day for them - but with 30 cars circulating, space was at a premium for every driver. Between the two Downtons was Thierry Xylander, an impressive performance with 9 positions between him and Phoenix team-mate Sergio Alvarez. Adrien Simon had another difficult session, only managing 9th position on a day where nothing appeared to go right for the Frenchman, while Dominykas Zvironas continued his fine debut season in FV with 10th. Outside the top ten, there were a number of notable performances, both positive and negative. Puccio Giodano's 11th for Westwood provides encouraging signs on their return season, Gabriele Garcia outperformed North Star team-mate Johan Halvosen in 13th, while Finn Schnyder in 15th also shows some potential from the AMR. Once more, Cheema's two entries looked solid, with Nikolai Milkovich in 14th and Tumo Kinnumen in 18th. Less positively, Lewis Ellington in 28th for Arrow was 8 positions behind Yakumi Takahashi, while Elroy Wagner struggled greatly in his Lopez to get a clean run throughout the session, slumping to 23rd position. In the session, there was a single crash which caused a brief stoppage only minutes into the session, when Enzo Domenicalli crashed his Franklin at the high speed left hander at Crowthorne (Turn 2) on the first flying lap, meaning the Italian veteran failed to set a lap time.
