Downton F1 team principal Bradley Downton has declared himself 'overjoyed' after his team secured fifth and ninth on the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix. Despite four places separating the drivers Nathaniel Powers was just under a tenth slower than teammate Marcus Thunder in a very tight qualifying session. 'For sure I am absolutely overjoyed with the session today,' Downton commented. 'Both drivers pulled great laps out of the bag and it's slightly disappointing for us that the grid is so close because normally being just under a tenth slower would mean just one place difference, not four.'
'That's not to say we're disappointed with Nathaniel's performance though, just at how tight the grid is,' Downton added quickly. 'But still, with how tight the grid is to have two cars in the top ten is even more of an achievement, I just hope we can translate that into race pace and a strong performance, unlike we were able to this time last season.' Marcus Thunder was also happy with the result stating, 'I probably could have gone a bit quicker and taken another position of two, but I was right on the limit and for me, that's a very satisfying result. We're on the clean side and best of the rest behind Liverpool and Franklin.' Nathaniel Powers wasn't so happy though, 'I was on for a solid lap that would have put me third but made a slight mistake in that pesky penultimate corner that cost me around two and a half tenths. Unfortunately today, with the grid so close, this means I'm down in ninth which no, is absolutely not what I think the car is capable of. It's much better.'
