Downton have this morning confirmed the rumours that Matteo Zetticci has signed a full-time contract with the team, and will join Downton for 2020. Zetticci makes the step up after his maiden year in the second tier of virtual racing - VWRS - where he finished fifth overall and as top rookie.
The Italian will take on the role of reserve driver - currently held by Sam Hudson - as the American will depart the team. "Firstly, we'd like to thank Sam for all of his hard work over the last few years. He has been absolutely instrumental in our recent success, but now he can no longer compete in VWRS, he wants to continue racing as opposed to being a reserve driver, and we simply could not offer him that. We wish him every success in finding himself a competitive race seat somewhere, and will do our very best to assist him in his efforts." "In his place, we are delighted to announce Matteo Zetticci will step up into the reserve driver role, which he will combine with a second season in VWRS with Formation Competition in 2020. Matteo is a very exciting young talent, and is chomping at the bit for this opportunity. We can also confirm he will get a number of practice outings." "In addition, we can confirm our other young driver Spencer James - who very quickly found fame this season as a quality driver and a bit of a 'meme-lord' - will move across from VARS to VERS in 2020, where he will also compete with Formation Competition and look to go one step better than the vice-Champion position he achieved this year." "The Downton FV Team driver line-up for the 2020 Formula Virtual season will be announced in due course."
