Sportitalia reporter Gianmario Angelino sought out a representative from BMPS Scuderia Meteor after the confirmation of veteran driver Carson Davenport’s move to FIRST. Rumours regarding Davenport’s future began last month when various sources stated that the 33-year-old had been lured away from the Italian team by another Formula Virtual team. This was confirmed to be true on Wednesday when FIRST Motorsport announced the experienced Portuguese driver as their test & reserve for 2022. Various attempts were made to speak to Team Principal Shane O’Connell but the Irishman was curiously not at the last V-Prix and is notoriously difficult to locate. Instead, Gianmario Angelino of Sportitalia was able to track down the Deputy Team Principal, and owner’s son, Guido Caliri near the team’s base in Ancona. Though initially seeming unwilling to talk to the press, Mr Caliri eventually gave some time to talk with our reporter. When asked about Davenport, Caliri simply stated “Carson has a contract to Brazil. This is the case from the start. After Brazil he is not with us, it was always just 1 year.” Our reporter asked for his thoughts on FIRST signing Davenport but did not get the response other than “It is not our business.” After some more unanswered questions it was then put to the Deputy Team Principal that the team is struggling heavily on and off the track and why some important team members have missed the race in Turkey, where the cars were excluded from qualifying. “We are here are we not? The team does not miss one. We were excluded from the qualifying in Turkey but we are bringing our commitment to every track. Off the track you say there are problems but this is whispers in the dark. The only problems come from troublesome people who want something they cannot get.” The off track problems which are referred to reportedly centre around former driver Mario Juan Lopez as well as an ongoing problem with parts in the team. Since the Italian team fell into Q1 for the first time early last season they have qualified just 7 times out of 42 attempts. The team will now have to act quickly to find a replacement for someone of such experience as Davenport to try to change the fortunes for the next season.
