Shanghai has just hosted the closest battle for pole position in the series history. It was Karl Beckenbauer who continued Liverpool's streak of pole positions setting his best time of 1.35.463. Within the final moments of the session Adrien Simon in the other Liverpool was pushing to the limit. The Frenchman crossed the line and went second fastest with a time of 1.35.465; two one thousandths of a second away from his teammate. Enrique Ruiz was next over the line and split the Liverpool's with the second quickest time of 1.35.464; one thousandths of a second away from pole position. The top three covered by three one thousandths of a second; something that has never happened before and may not likely happen ever again. Tumo Kinnumen posted a brilliant lap to go fourth quickest, under two tenths of a second away from Beckenbauer. Puccio Giodano set the fifth quickest time, while championship leader Will Hoskins could only manage sixth in a very tight qualifying battle. Lewis Ellington was seventh fastest for Peugeot, Elroy Wagner eighth for Team 23, and Diego Campos was ninth quickest for Ingram. Enzo Domenicalli will start from tenth on the grid tomorrow; his time half a second away from pole. It was another disappointing day for Downton with Marcus Thunder missing out on the top ten in eleventh. Last years Chinese Grand Prix Carson Davenport set the twelfth fastest time. Nikolai Milkovich could only manage thirteenth with Keith Boston, Nathaniel Powers, and Jean Mattson behind. Ivan Lesic's best effort placed him in seventeenth on his return to racing. Hugh Dwyer was eighteenth, edging out Kurtis Gardner and his teammate Romano Agostino. Felix Beyer was twenty-first for Force Australia, while Abel Osterhagen set the twenty-second best time of the day. Hiroto Nakumaya and Michal Kubat will make up the back row for tomorrows race. After the closest fight for pole the series has ever witnessed many are expecting a close fight for the win for the race. Tomorrow will mark the fourth time Beckenbauer has started on pole; however it is worth noting that in his three attempts so far he has lost the lead going into the first corner. Ruiz was incredibly close to his maiden pole position so the Brazilian will be aiming for a second win of the season and to narrow the gap to Will Hoskins in the world drivers championship. The 2013 Chinese Grand Prix was effected with rain throughout and there is a slight possibility the same may happen for 2014. Weather reports suggest that we may see a dry start but rain might hit the track at some point during half distance.
