Currently bottom placed in the standings, Highwind FV Racing have announed an entire overhaul of their driver line-up. Long-standing drivers Nikolai Milkovich and Diego Campos will not be retained for 2022, as well as Karl Beckenbauer who is on loan to the team from Westwood. In place of them, eVirtual drivers Alexander McLaughlin and Sebastian Bergkvist will share the #18 car, with the team aiming to identify the better performer over the first half, who will then race in the second half. Who will get to start the season will depend on their eVirtual performances this winter.
\n \nA not so enthusiastic Ahmed Cheema explained the reasoning behind this in front of the media virtually. "It's pretty obvious that this has been a terrible season for us, it has been a write off since Japan. The new management wants to refresh the team, start with a clean slate of sorts. They're looking into changing the set up in the team itself and have pushed for a new driver line up. \n \nIt's a great shame to drop Nikolai and Diego, they've been with us since day 1, they're a part of the team identity in a way. What they've done for us is invaluable and we're going to miss them a lot. And while we have only got to work with him for about half a year, it's quite clear why Karl has achieved so much in FV, he's constantly trying to learn more and pushed us to keep motivated this year despite everything. It's also a shame we can't provide him and Nikolai with a good car for their last races with us, but that's the way it is. \n \nMcLaughlin and Bergkvist were two drivers who impressed our eV branch last winter. McLaughlin's Indy and Bergkvist career results are commendable as well. We're looking forward to getting to work with them." \n \nIt marks the end of an era for the Cheema/Highwind squad, given all of their 8 points have been scored by Milkovich and Campos. With all 3 drivers well in their 30s, it also calls into question whether they will still be in FV next year. \n \nThere was no news about who will drive the #17 car, though Cheema indicated that it would be announced before the end of the summer.
