After a difficult 2020, Franklin have hit the ground running in 2021, Nick Addison putting the former Champions top of the pile after day one in Estoril. Addison was over four tenths clear of the field running on the soft tyres, while Giani Ledesma in the Meteor led the chasing pack much to the surprise of the paddock, albeit the Italian was the only driver to run the super soft tyres on the opening day. Will Hoskins in the FIRST was third fastest on another different tyre compound - the British driver opening his running on the mediums - with Olen Inman just behind in the Ocelot. The two were a handful of tenths clear of the next medium runner - Adrien Simon in the Mathershaw Porsche, suggesting the French outfit do indeed have some work to do as they have made noises about over the winter. Marcus Thunder put his Lucas less than a tenth further back on the same compound, while Brock Kidd got his first taste of Formula Virtual on the soft tyres, splitting the medium-shod foursome with fifth fastest. Matteo Zetticci opened Downton's account on the hard tyres - setting a time faster than that of both Jules Barclay's Westwood and Raj Sharma's Lopez - despite the two being on the soft compound. Barclay was the last driver within one second of Addison's fastest time. Outside of the top ten was solely reserve drivers - and largely hard tyred runners - with the only exception being Rodolfo de la Fuente's Arrow in twelfth, running the mediums. Ahead was the Phoenix of Dominic Hanson, while Urmo Kruuda in the Ingram, Dmytro Kovalenko for AMR and Diego Campos driving the newly branded Highwind outfit completed the days runners.
