Meteor Motorsport has announced that Jules Simon and Sebastien Vocquelin will be one its drivers for the 2018 season. Jamie Gerrard will remain will the team as a test and reserve driver In a statement released by the Meteor Team it was confirmed that French pair will take over the vacant seats of the departing Johan Halvosen and Stuart Harrison for the 2018 season, both on multi-year deals.
“To be racing in Formula Virtual in 2018 is incredible, I can’t thank Meteor enough for showing faith in my ability,” said the newly appointed Simon “2018 is going to be a big learning curve for me, and I’ll be taking things on a race-by-race, lap-by-lap basis, but I’m eager to absorb everything Williams can share with me so that I improve,” added Vocquelin. Both drivers and Meteor as a team insisted that they are under no illusions about the immense task ahead for the coming season, stressing that there are many elements about the new car still to be developed, and many aspects that will prove challenging for two relatively inexperienced drivers. “As a team, we continue to push forward in our goal to competitively finish with points, before hopefully eventually targeting podiums and winning races once again. We are pleased to be able to offer both Jules and Sebastien the opportunity to step up and show what they can do in Formula Virtual. We have achieved success in providing both the relatively inexperienced Stuart and Johan with a race-winning car and help create race winners in them, and we hope this will be the start of a long successful career for Jules and Sebastien as well”. Recent paddock rumours have suggested that both Jules and Sebastien have acquired relatively large money contracts from Meteor, something that has surprised a number of voices in the Formula Virtual paddock, questioning whether either driver is ready for a seat in Formula Virtual, or of the value of the salary they are heard to be receiving. “Meteor will never comment on the worth of one the financial worth of any contract within a team. We will say, however, that it is part of Meteor’s philosophy to risk bringing young drivers to our sport, regardless of how much money this will initially cost us, and we are looking forward to seeing both develop as drivers. We place faith in the drivers that the financial gamble will be paid in performance”
