Scott Parsons has been rushed to hospital in a coma and although his other injuries are still unknown, he is said to be in a critical condition.
The worse news however is that his personal trainer, Lukey Harris - who was acting as Parsons co-driver on the event - has passed away from his injuries on the way to the hospital.
Parsons was competing in a one-off event between the Canadian and US rounds of the Virtual Formula One Championship.
In treacherously wet and slippery conditions Parsons cut a flat out corner but clipped a rock on the inside. This launched the car onto it's side before it rolled through the safety barrier and down a steep embankment before slamming - passenger side first - into a tree.
There were no spectators in the area the car had landed however a few who had witnessed the accident immediately called the emergency services fearing the worst.
Downton team principal Bradley Downton was notified immediately and made his way with Parsons' family and friends - including teammate Kip Maxwell - from Canada - where the latest Virtual F1 race took place - to the hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
We have received news that Parsons is in a coma however currently have no news of other injuries.
We have also received tragic news that Parsons' co-driver and personal trainer Lukey Harris has passed away from his injuries while en-route to the hospital. His family have been informed and Downton F1 are paying for immediate flights for them to fly out to Argentina.
While Downton himself was unavailable for comment a spokeswoman for the team said: 'We are deeply saddened by the incident today and most notably the death of a fantastic team member in Lukey Harris. He was a truly valued member of the team and always had a warm and friendly approach to his work and everyone around him. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his friends and family.
