After a ridiculous run of 5 pole positions in a row, Brock Kidd was unable to wrap up the championship on Saturday as he could only manage 6th in final qualifying session of the season. In his place, an epic 5 way battle for pole took place - with the 5 drivers separated by less than a tenth at the end of it. At the end of the session though, it was Alexander McLaughlin who took his first pole of the season, after two front row starts before. Alongside him, surprisingly, was the Tesla of Jochem van Snelheid, who matched the New Zealander's lap time down to the last thousandth, but set his time just 7 seconds after McLaughlin had crossed the line. 2nd is nevertheless Tesla's best result so far.
Sebastian Bergkvist, Will Taylor and Felipe Cesar all traded fastest times with McLaughlin and van Snelheid initially, but at the end of the session ended up falling short, just under 9 hundredths off the leading pair. Bergkvist was pleased with 3rd however, and 4th marks a comeback for Taylor after some shocking qualifying performances recently. The three were spit by 2 thousandths of a second, underlining how close of a session it was. Kidd never really looked a contender for pole, but 6th was still a disappointment. However, his title rival Oleksandr Zozulya struggled even more, just about scraping a top ten start. With Kip Maxwell starting two places behind Kidd in 8th, it means that at the moment, Kidd and Downton would still win both titles by a healthy margin. Renault didn't hit the heights of their rivals Mitsubishi and Porsche, but a double top ten start was still pleasing for the French manufacturer. Rodrigo Sanchez and Robert Stefansson weren't as high up the grid as last week, but 11th and 12th was a solid return given the machinery at hand. Elsewhere, Arrow struggled with neither cars troubling the top ten, as did Ryota Yoshida, who after some good performances recently, hit the walls a couple of times and finished 15th. Luke Stokey also had a horror performance compared to his teammate in 16th. Highwind's poor form from last week did not change, with both cars rounding out the top 20. On the other hand, Thunderhead had something to be happy about, with neither car starting on the back row after beating Refugio Boyer and Hitoshi Katayama.
