A rollarcoaster of a season that has seen plenty of action has led us up until this moment - the American eV-Prix around Long Beach. Today, Taylor, Zozulya and McLaughlin will do battle around the circuit for the drivers' title, while the Ukranian and his polesitting teammate Maxwell look to wrap up the teams' title for Downton.
Strategy will play a crucial role, and most have opted for the softer two tyres, with only Bergkvist and Agostino on hards. 11 drivers have gone for mediums: both Downton's, Jaguar's, Lada's, Fusion's, Cesar, Davies and Vocquelin. The rest, including McLaughlin and front row starter Matthews, are on softs. After 11 qualifying sessions, the drivers emerged on track to fight for an eVirtual pole for the last time this season: around the streets of Long Beach. All eyes will be on Taylor, McLaughlin and Zozulya, who hunt for those extra 3 points to help them in the title battle.
An exciting qualifying has set up a fantastic race here in Laguna Seca. Einarsson starts on pole for Renault, ahead of Lada's Ostberg and Arrow's van Snelheid. But while championship leader Taylor and Cesar start in the top 10, rivals McLaughlin and Zozulya are much further back.
A dry day has arrived after the rain yesterday, but strategy is still a crucial part of the race. Only Bergkvist starts on the hard tyres this time around. Van Snelheid is the highest placed on mediums, along with Zvironas, Klein, Cesar, Garcia, Thunder, Vocquelin, Maxwell, Davies, Stokey and Zhao. The rest of the grid, 18 drivers, are on softs. The penultimate round of the season and the final triple crown event to boot - welcome to qualifying around the legendary Laguna Seca raceway. With 85 points still up for grabs across the next two races, the title fight is as tight as a monkey's bottom - with Taylor leading Zozulya by 1 point, while McLaughlin and Cesar remain in contention. A good qualifying for any of them will pay dividends, but that's easier said than done: especially when it's pouring rain out here.
Given his exploits this year, it's a surprise that Saturday saw the first pole position for McLaughlin, but now the New Zealander has a chance to take another win. Looking to stop him are Vocquelin and Thunder, while many front runners look to recover from lowly positions.
Today sees perhaps the most variation in strategy, as 5 drivers chose an efficient battery, those being both Highwinds, Maxwell, Hudson and Davies. 9 went for balanced - McLaughlin, Thunder, Zvironas, van Snelheid, Einarsson and Ostberg, as well as Cesar, Taylor and Zozulya. The rest, including front row starter Vocquelin, are going aggressive. Gathering for the final oval race of the season, the teams and drivers now descend to Mexico for round 10 of the eV championship. Qualifying takes place around the 2/4 corner Autodromo Miguel E. Abed (depending on who you asked), with several teams looking to take advantage of the final race on this track type.
A debut pole position in qualifying means Yoshida starts on pole for today's Moroccan eV-Prix, but with championship leader Zozulya and his nearest rival Taylor right behind, it's set to be an intriguing race.
An average Moroccan day sees all 3 compounds in action - admittedly half the field has chosen mediums but of the rest, 6 - Yoshida, both K8ley drivers, Ostberg, Zhao and Einarsson - have taken the soft tyres, with the other 7 - McLaughlin, Maxwell, Hutchinson, the two Porsche's, Stokey and Davies - went for hards. |
