Downton dominated proceedings during qualifying for the Azerbaijan eV-Prix, with Brock Kidd heading Kip Maxwell by less than one tenth of a second, but with third placed Felipe Cesar over half a second back from the pole time. Downton were quick from the word go and had an advantage over the rest of field, while Kidd also had the measure of his team mate. Thrice Maxwell took the top spot from him, but within moment Kidd was back on provisional pole.
Cesar was the orange machines' closest challenger, just beating out Aron Einarsson to head the second row. A stellar qualifying effort from Jochem van Snelheid sees his Tesla machine start from fifth, the Dutchman just five thousandths of a second ahead of Oleksandr Zozulya, the Ukranian heading the Jaguar charge after a difficult qualifying for the team. From there Stuart Harrison was a further six tenths of a second back in the second Renault, ahead of Championship leader Will Taylor, the British driver left scratching his head after ending up 1.6 seconds away from pole. Ryota Yoshida lines up ninth in the second Maserati Cerebus, while Alexander McLaughlin was another driver disappointed, the thus far giant-killing performances from the Kiwi somewhat halted with only a tenth place. Steven Kasami impressed again with a solid 11th ahead of the second Tesla of Luka Stokey, while Otso Toivonen led the BMW Highwind charge in thirteenth. Porsche Westwood struggled again though Olen Inman got a rare qualifying win over Sebastian Bergkvist, while Rodrigo Sanchez failed to repeat his heroics from China and Lada endured a disappointing session.
