Session reports from round two of the 2020 VERS season, here from the wonderful Brands Hatch circuit in Kent. Ott Eskola arrives here in Britain as the championship leader after a string of consistent performances in Pau last time out, but can he finally capture that elusive win? QualifyingAs the drivers finally got out there once more, it was a familiar face on pole for both races - Spencer James stole the show with absolutely scorching laps to take the pole for both races one again! Joining him on the front row for race one will be Heikki Veskila while row two sees Zeferino Cardoso and Krzysztof Kozlowski, both with impressive laps. Championship leader Eskola will start race one from 5th. Race two sees Cardoso live up to expectations with a front-row start, while row two will have Veskila and the impressive rookie Timo Ziegler. Race OneThe drivers lined up on the grid for what promised to be an exciting race one from Brands Hatch… Lights out and away we go! James gets off to a flyer and maintains his lead, while behind him the tussle for positions is well underway - Kozlowski made a good start and passed Veskila who bogged down, before taking Cardoso into Hawthorn Bend for 2nd place. His race would not last long, however, as the Pole dipped a wheel into the grass on entry to Westfield Bend, losing control of his car and crashing heavily. A sad end to a promising race. Further back, it was chaos as ever! Pau race one winner François didn’t even get to start the race, as a mistake heating up the tyres on the formation lap saw him go off and beach his car in the gravel, the Frenchman left punching the air in frustration as his car was extracted.
The race looked to settle down slightly as only a few battles were occurring. However, it all kick-started again with Holst tangling with Axelsson, the Norwegian driver left with a broken wishbone at the side of the track. Up front it was James’ race to lose, but that was exactly what happened yet again! With a commanding lead and no pressure on him, the Jamaican driver was tagged by Crys Luga while lapping the Hungarian, and was turned around into the barriers! This left Cardoso in the lead, but not for long as Veskila overtook him with a daring move up the inside of Surtees! James was eventually forced to retire with bent steering from his impact. Parker Jordan was also running well but a gearbox issue meant he had to retire from a top 5 position. In the end, it was Veskila taking his second win in succession in dominant fashion! The battle for second raged on, and Cardoso was eventually pipped to the line by championship leader Eskola who claimed another second place, leaving Cardoso on the bottom step of the podium. Following them was the top rookie of Ziegler, Jarvinen, Daniels, Brandt, Seppanen, Beales, Axelsson, Bateson and Garcia rounded off the top 12. This result meant all drivers but Luga now had points.
