Amidst the vast amount of changes in teams and drivers for VWRS in 2022, an old, yet familiar, face will be making a return to the junior series. In 2022, the Virtual World Racing Series (VWRS) will see it’s biggest shake up to date; with no fewer than seven new teams entering the series next season. As the driver line ups have been finalised, a couple of surprises have arisen, one surprise being the return of James Thompson to Tier 2. The British driver, commonly referred to simply as ‘JT’, last competed in the junior series way back in 2018, where he finished his second season in FV2 in 20th place overall. He is quite literally a one team man, having spent his entire career with Phoenix Motorsport, albeit with one season driving for Bronislav alongside his reserve duties at Phoenix that year. In 2022, Thompson will partner Spencer James at the prestigious Formation Competition VWRS team, as well as remaining in his reserve role at Phoenix. The 27-year-old is keen to play down his chances, though. “Look, I’m under no illusions that VWRS next year is gonna be tough as hell. I’ve not driven full time since 2018 and a lot has changed since then, but it’ll be great to go up against some of the amazing talent coming through at the moment. The link with Formation came about from mingling with them and the Downton guys, obviously with Phoenix being in an engine partnership with Downton. It’s an incredible opportunity for me to drive for a team with such a rich history in the junior series and I’ll do everything I can to help them achieve their goal. I’ve been brought in to help Spencer [James] take the title, so I’ll do everything I can to help him and the team.”
