A huge downpour at Watkins Glen affected the qualifying session ahead of the Steak n' Shake New York V-Prix, and resulting in Jawa Ahmad taking a shock pole position for Sapporo Team Morley Racing, ahead of both of his championship contending team mates. Ahmad has always excelled in wet conditions - notably at Indianapolis in 2013 for a Formula Virtual race where he finished second during his maiden race while competing for Molto Veloce - but this pole position stunned the paddock as he has been relatively lacklustre all season.
Morley teammate Yakumi Takahashi will line up alongside with Marcus Thunder and Nick Addison completing the second row, Morley with three cars in the top four. Fellow championship contenders Brock Kidd and Felipe Cesar are also starting in the top ten in seventh and ninth respectively, but it was a disappointing day for outside shot Will Taylor, who will start just sixteenth. Enzo Domenicalli heads row three ahead of Hiroto Nakumaya - the Japanese driver enjoying one of his best sessions of the season in his favoured wet conditions - while Alex Wright put in another fantastic qualifying for Lancashire Racing Team in eighth place.
