Jochem van Snelheid will start from a shock pole position in tomorrow's Surfers Paradise V-Prix after a stunning final lap just minutes before red flags were flown and the qualifying session was ended early due to a storm. The session began and ran in appalling conditions on the Gold Coast, with drivers tiptoeing around, simply trying to stay on circuit. In the end, it only lasted for 23 minutes of the scheduled hour, with Jochem van Snelheid sat atop the standings and therefore taking pole position.
His lap was just 0.031 quicker than second placed Will Taylor, who himself displaced Nick Addison from the front row by just 5 thousandths of a second. Hiroto Nakumaya excelled in the wet conditions and will start from a career-best fourth, while the 2017 Champion and current Championship leader make up the third row. Hugh Dwyer and Yakumi Takahashi ensured a third of the top nine consisted of Morley cars, with Aron Einarsson completing the top ten ahead of Marcus Thunder and Felipe Cesar. Incredibly - despite the miserable conditions - there were very few serious incidents. Yellow flags were near permanent as drivers span at various corners, but the only damage came when Callum Brandon hit the wall at turn one following his first lap. He limped back to the pits but the damage forced him out of the session and resigned him to another last place start. van Snelheid's lap came just 7 seconds before the red flags came out, with numerous attempts made in the proceeding two hours to restart the session, albeit all to no avail.
