Lewis Ellington has taken a comprehensive pole position for the first Triple Crown event of 2018, the Toyota Japan 500. Ellington lapped the Motegi circuit with an average speed of 205.396mph, a whopping 0.7mph faster than second placed Nathaniel Powers - who returns to compete in the Triple Crown again in 2018. To put Ellington's advantage into perspective, the remaining 32 cars were split by just 3.5mph.
Nick Addison completes the three-car front row for Team Morley, though the Australian outfit struggled on a circuit that is far from suited to their Toyota car. The Chevrolet performs best on ovals - clearly shown with them taking seven of the top ten positions - though the front row is made up of one of each manufacturer. Enrique Ruiz makes his debut in IndyVirtual from fourth on the grid ahead of Kip Maxwell and Will Taylor - the latter ensuring Rodeo Racing got both cars in the top six, an incredible achievement for the usually sole-car outfit. Defending Champion Brock Kidd will start from seventh as he looks to get his season back on track following two disappointing races, where he will head the third row from Aron Einarsson and 2017 runner-up Felipe Cesar, with Kiara Thunder completing the top ten. Further back Championship leader Hugh Dwyer could only manage fourteenth - just ahead of team mate and first round winner Yakumi Takahashi - with Marcus Thunder down in eighteenth. It was also a disaster for defending Triple Crown Champion and Japan 500 winner Felix Beyer, who will attempt to repeat his feat from 2017 from a disappointing 23rd on the grid.
