The Steak n’ Shake New York V-Prix was held in glorious sunshine after yesterday’s heavy rain, with Jawa Ahmad on pole ahead of Yakumi Takahashi. Right behind them were championship contenders Marcus Thunder and Nick Addison, with fellow rivals Brock Kidd and Felipe Cesar starting 7th and 9th. From the start, the Malaysian held the lead, while Marcus Thunder was unable to mount a serious challenge on Takahashi. The field got through the majority of the lap cleanly, until Callum Brandon and Luke Stokey made contact into the horseshoe – both drivers were out, but good thinking from the drivers and quick work from the marshals meant there was no need for a full course caution. Ahmad quickly created a two second buffer, but after that Takahashi kept pace.
On lap 4, Ahmad dropped back behind Takahashi, and suddenly seemed to lose engine power. Thunder, Nick Addison and Enzo Domenicalli all made their way past in quick succession, but Ahmad seemed to recover his pace. However on lap 28, he pulled into the pitlane from 6th position to retire, with his Morley team confirming later on that it was electrical issues that put paid to the polesitter’s race. Keith Boston retired a lap earlier, with the electrical issue seeming to be a fault that could strike any of the Toyota runners. On lap 40, Brock Kidd divebombed Nick Addison with an audacious move into turn one, pushing the Australian out wide to take third place while a lap later, Rossendo Werner’s consistent finishing streak took a hit when he pulled into the pits from a distant 21st place – suspension issues arising from a hard hit on the wall on the outside of the final corner being the main factor. By lap 60, Takahashi held a 32 second lead ahead of Thunder, who was under immense pressure from Kidd. The American made another bold move into turn one, and once again it came off, putting the American Engineering driver into second place ahead of Thunder. At this point, the gaps between the field had spread a bit. Pedro Costa retired from 14th an agonising two laps from the end on a day where all three manufacturers seemed to be suffering from engine reliability problems. Takahashi took a dominant win ahead of Kidd, Thunder and Addison, with Domenicalli allowing teammate Cesar through into 5th on the final lap to collect more points in the championship.
