Enrique Ruiz has taken pole position for tomorrow's Spanish V-Prix, edging out the two Downtons of Klaas van Snelheid and Nathaniel Powers by only a few hundredths of a second. The Brazilian, the Dutchman and the Brit were trading times throughout the session, with pole looking like it could go to any one of them, but at the chequered flag, it was the Franklin driver sitting at the top of the pile. Q1 There was no change in the teams taking part in Q1 this weekend, but a change in drivers, as Oleksandr Zozulya swapped seats with Andromeda's Will Hoskins. Interest was therefore high, with the Ukranian having to fight for his place on tomorrow's grid.
After struggling in the opening rounds, Cheema were immediately impressive in Spain, going first and second in the early running, but as the session wound down, Arden Hutchinson leapt ahead of the duo for Lucas, with Nikolai Milkovich and Carson Davenport less than a tenth behind. The two Ocelots were closely matched, Hunter Ryan getting the better of his more experienced teammate, Puccio Giodano. Both scraped into Q2, just behind the Andromeda of Rodolfo de la Fuente. For the third time in four races, both AMRs failed to make the grid, along with the second Lucas of Marcus Thunder. The biggest shock, however, was Zozulya, who ended the session half a second off de la Fuente, leaving Andromeda's hopes tomorrow resting with the Spanish rookie. Full results of Q1 can be seen below. 1 Arden Hutchinson Lucas-Downton 1:19.725 2 Nikolai Milkovich Cheema-Alfa Romeo 1:19.764 +0.039 3 Carson Davenport Cheema-Alfa Romeo 1:19.817 +0.091 4 Rodolfo de la Fuente Andromeda-Honda 1:19.820 +0.094 5 Hunter Ryan Ocelot-Alfa Romeo 1:20.037 +0.311 6 Puccio Giodano Ocelot-Alfa Romeo 1:20.097 +0.372 7 Dmytro Kovalenko AMR-Ford 1:20.196 +0.470 8 Marcus Thunder Lucas-Downton 1:20.300 +0.575 9 Oleksandr Zozulya Andromeda-Honda 1:20.305 +0.580 10 Finn Schnyder AMR-Ford 1:20.857 +1.132 Q2 Tyres were the story of Q2, with stable but high temperatures putting a lot of stress on the qualifying tyres used by all teams. Drivers returned to the pits complaining of the tyres drastically losing performance in the final sector of their flying laps. However, some didn't even get that far. As Jules Simon attempted to pass Nikolai Milkovich into the Senna chicane, the Meteor slid wide, collecting the Cheema, and putting both drivers into the gravel and out of the session. Will Hoskins compared favourably against Felix Pérez in his first race for the FIRST team, eventually edging ahead of the Mexican in an all-FIRST third row, with Adrien Simon in the lead DS Mathershaw ahead in fourth. Felix Beyer qualified at the head of the midfield in a strong session for Holmqvist in ninth and eleventh, separated by the North Star of Johan Halvosen. One of the stars of Q2 was Puccio Gioano, having only just made it through Q1, the Italian delivered a lap good enough for fourteenth on the grid. Gabriele García and Hunter Ryan found themselves slightly off the pace of their teammates, and will start further down the order, while Carson Davenport showed well to give Cheema a spot in the top twenty. After being fastest in Q1, however, Arden Hutchinson felt the balance of his car had changed between sessions, and qualified slowest of those to set a time.
