When Formula Virtual made it's debut to the motorsport world in 2013, the series was made up of twelve teams. In 2016 the series extended to thirteen teams, before returning back to just twelve in 2018 after Westwoods' sudden departure. While it is expected a tender will be opened in the near future to fill the vacant spot, CEO Nic Morley revealed he is not ruling out an even higher amount of teams.
During an interview it was revealed that the Australian would consider allowing more than thirteen teams in future years in an attempt to create an even more competitive racing series. "Ideally I always want to have at least thirteen teams racing in Formula Virtual, which is why it was a shame to see Westwood leave, but that is life and I wish them the best. We're heading into the midway point of the season so there is no hurry to open up a tender for 2019 to fill the vacant thirteenth spot. To be honest I'm open to the idea of allowing even more teams to the sport. It would require more thought but I think having fifteen.. sixteen teams could create quite a spectacle and potentially make the sport even more competitive. It depends how high the interest there is among other stuff. We will see", said Nic Morley. Could Formula Virtual really be considering more than thirteen teams in the sport? While nothing more was said during the interview, it is speculated that the race grid would still remain at twenty-six cars, thus meaning some of the slowest in qualifying may not qualify for the race. It is also believed that adding in the danger of failing to qualify for the race may entice lower performing teams to develop more in season rather than trundling around the back causing havoc for front runners. Whatever the decision is, a tender is expected to open in September or October. Comments are closed.
