Following the news around six weeks ago that British Formula Virtual team Phoenix had lost three key sponsors for the 2020 season, details have emerged today of further problems for the small outfit from Greater Manchester. As predicted; Total, another company brought to the team by their partnership with DS Automobiles, announced yesterday their intention to terminate their partnership. Slightly more surprising though, is the news that long-term Phoenix sponsor Memorex will also end their relationship with the team, after four seasons in junior series and then Formula Virtual. Team principal Alex Easton is said to be “gutted” about the loss of Memorex. Adding to Phoenix’s woes; 2019 title sponsor Ecotricity have stated they will not continue their title sponsorship into 2020. The small silver lining for the team is that the UK-based green energy company will continue to sponsor the team, albeit in a much lesser role. Phoenix’s Public Relations manager Terry McCarroll on the situation; “It’s not ideal, no. We get the circumstances behind Memorex pulling out, and Ecotricity’s situation is a shame but at least they’ll be sticking with us in the future, just to a lesser extent. It’s gonna be a busy few months between now and the end of the year trying to attract new sponsors so we could do with more good results on track to help out a bit.” The departure of Total leaves the team without an official fuel supplier next season and, coupled with Memorex, leaves the team with just three confirmed sponsorship deals for 2020.
