Following the Austrian V-Prix, in which Lewis Ellington scored Meteor’s best result of the season by bringing the car home sixth on his return to the team, further details regarding their future have been revealed. After the race, the team made the media aware of an upcoming announcement to be made outside of their motor home. Journalists and reporters from various media outlets made their way over to the Meteor motor home and eventually Guido Caliri [Deputy team principal] emerged to address the small crowd.
Guido Caliri: "Hello to all of you, we have summoned you to reveal other of our plans for the future of Meteor. First, after much thought, my father [Piercarlo Caliri] decided to move the team’s headquarters into a plot in Italy, near where his company is based. Preparation for the move has begun and will be complete at the end of the year. Secondly we have acquired a new sponsor for 2020; Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. The Italian bank is the oldest in the world and will be the new title sponsor of Meteor. Become the first sponsor to sign up with us after the acquisition and both parties are very happy with this. Finally, very exciting news. I am pleased to be able to reveal that our engine supply next year will be none other than Lamborghini. We have been negotiating since the sale of the team and after knowing Infiniti would not have continued. Now I will answer the questions." Reporter: Meteor has been settled in the USA since 2016, so what are the motives behind moving across the Atlantic to Italy? And will this have any effects logistically? GC: "Italy has a rich history in motorsport and, above all, it is the home of the Caliri family and business. Logistically it makes more sense that Meteor is in the new base since most of the races are in Europe, travel costs will be less in general." R: Is the deal with... *checks notes* Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena a major deal or is it the same as any other sponsor? GC: "It is similar to any other agreement with the title sponsor, the BMPS [Banco Monte dei Paschi di Siena] will have the first choice on where their identity will go on the car in the coming years and the name of our team will incorporate it." R: Will you be a semi manufacturer team with Lamborghini and is there plans to supply other teams as well? Given it will be their first year will they be slightly down on performance compared to others? GC: "As far as we know, it seems that we will be the only team with Lamborghini in 2020, but I cannot say with certainty that they will not supply another one. We will not be a “works” team as some say, Lamborghini it was clear that this is a big step for them and the learning curve will be tremendous, so naturally the expectations have to be lowered. Both Meteor and Lamborghini are very excited about the coming years."
