Jochem van Snelheid has taken his maiden pole position ahead of tomorrows Malaysian V-Prix, thrashing the field in a very wet qualifying session by more than one second.
van Snelheid's mega lap came late in the session and denied Downton what looked set to be a first front row lockout, but instead Nathaniel Powers will start on the front row while Jochem's brother Klaas will head row two ahead of the second Franklin of Enrique Ruiz.
There was persistent rain throughout the session which somewhat alleviated the usual random nature of wet qualifying sessions, though Olen Inman in sixth for FUN raised eyebrows after a disappointing opening race in Australia last time out.
The other big shock was once again the disappointing pace of Felix Beyer. The Dutchman struggled in the wet practice session yesterday and could do no better than 22nd on the grid, with both himself and his AMR visibly disappointed. Beyer was quoted as saying the performance "confused" him, because "the lap felt quite good."
