Puccio Giodano has taken his second pole position in three races following qualifying for the British V-Prix, where he will be joined on the front row by team mate Enrique Ruiz in a surprise Franklin front-row lockout after the championship leaders Downton struggled.
Giodano and Ruiz were separated by just 0.033 as Franklin look to get their season back on track after a miserable run of luck which sees them sitting just fourth in the championship, 157 points behind Downton.
By contrast the team who have performed so well this season struggled. While Klaas van Snelheid salvaged third with a late lap to jump up from twelfth, Nathaniel Powers could only manage ninth, with many wondering whether the injuries he suffered in his big crash two weeks ago in Austria were affecting him more than initially suspected.
The final decision on whether Powers was allowed to race this weekend was due to be taken yesterday evening following practice, but he was reportedly in considerable pain after the session - which he ended twenty minutes early - and so the decision was delayed until today. It was decided just one and a half hours before qualifying that Powers would be allowed to compete.
Aleksy Nowosinki - who had missed out on practice after Gabriele García was given a run in his car, which he duly put second fastest - managed his best ever and his teams joint best ever qualifying with fourth and a second row start, showing the practice pace to be no fluke. Judson Sikes meanwhile was furious with himself after crashing on the exit of Stowe while on a lap that looked set to put him into the top three, and will instead start just fifteenth.
Arden Hutchinson and Lewis Ellington will share the third row ahead of Tumo Kinnumen and Adrien Simon, as seven different teams were represented in the top eight on the grid. Hugh Dwyer rounds out the top ten while Allar Kangur was unhappy with thirteenth in his DS Mathershaw. Further down the field Stuart Harrison qualified 20th, but will start 25th following the five-place grid penalty he was awarded for causing a collision with Powers at the last race in Austria.
