Charlotte, North Carolina – FIRST Motorsport have announced the retention of driver Felix Pérez in a statement on the team’s website. This announcement comes as Pérez sits 8th in the drivers’ championship, one point behind teammate Zozulya, and after his maiden podium last race at Indianapolis. FVA media reached out and got quotes from Team Principal Adam Blocker as well as driver Felix Pérez.
Team Principal Adam Blocker: “FIRST Motorsport is pleased to announce the resigning of Felix Pérez as a race driver for the 2020 Formula Virtual season. We have worked with Felix since the beginning of his 2016 FV2 campaign, when he joined our young driver program. Since then we’ve seen him improve significantly as a driver: winning the FV2 championship in 2017, settling into Formula Virtual in 2018, and now showing great pace at several races this season. Felix has a lot of potential as a driver, and with time he will become better at minimizing mistakes and taking advantage of opportunities that come his way. Felix’s podium in the US is his first of many, and we are happy to continue supporting him as a driver.” Driver Felix Pérez: “I’m happy to drive again for FIRST next season. FIRST has believed in me and facilitated my development as a driver for several years now, and we are finally getting to show what our potential is this season. I know that on several occasions this season, better results were possible than what we have achieved, but the positive is that those results were possible. This means that we have potential to score some great results given the right circumstances in the remaining races of 2019 and continue that form into 2020. From everything I’ve seen, FIRST will be towards the front of the field for years to come and I am excited to be a part of it. Getting my maiden podium in Indianapolis was a huge breakthrough, I feel a lot more confidence that we can go and get similar results in the second half of the season.” The announcement of Felix Pérez means that three-time podium finisher Oleksandr Zozulya has been ousted from FIRST for 2019, as had been rumored for months. It also means that VWRS driver Stefan Klien will not driver for FIRST as a race driver in 2020. He is rumored to have a contract with FIRST, but it remains to be seen whether he will remain the team’s test driver or be loaned out/sold to another team.
