Amongst the build-up to this weekend’s United States V-Prix, it has emerged that Lewis Ellington will make his return to Formula Virtual with Meteor International, who he drove for in 2014 when the team were known as Peugeot. Above: Spain, 2014. Ellington's last win in Formula Virtual.
Ellington’s return to the Meteor team will be the second return of it’s kind in two races, with Carson Davenport returning to Lucas this weekend - albeit for just a handful of races. Ellington, who hasn’t started a V-Prix since Brazil 2017, was visibly thrilled to be returning to the grid: “Can’t wait, I really am relishing this opportunity to prove my doubters wrong once again. There have been far too many missed opportunities and terribly timed moves in my career in FV so far, this is the one that I really need to make count. The new guys here at Meteor mean business and they’ve been clear with what they want from me, really can’t wait to get started. It's also nice to return to the team where I won my last race in FV, admittedly it's much changed from the Peugeot days but it still has that same core.” Shane O’Connell [Meteor team principal] was unavailable for comment, but deputy team principal and son of new owner Piercarlo Caliri - Guido Caliri - spoke to the press for the first time since the takeover of the American team: “We now have a clear goal for the second half of this season. We know where we lie for our financial state and our development, so now we need to calculate our drivers. Jules [Simon] and MJ [Lopez] have been a match for each other to now, so we bring in Lewis to see where everyone really is. Lewis has shown he is capable of winning like he did with this team in 2014, as Peugeot, and he acts now as the benchmark for his teammate to achieve from Austria forwards.” Guido was pressed on who would partner the two-time race winning Brit: “We... myself, Shane and my father.. we sit down and talk from now until then. Whoever impresses us most this weekend puts himself in the best position to have a future with Meteor International, they must perform under this new pressure. However, Lewis knows he must perform at the highest standard. They all know that there are two seats to take for 2020, now is time to make their claim.” Meteor have scored fourteen points so far this season, with two eighth places being their best results so far. Below is the team's complete statistics under the previous ownership and management of founder Kazuki Armos. V-Prix: 111 Wins: 4 Podiums: 13 Poles: 3 Fastest Laps: 6 Points: 541
