Following rumours last week that DS Automobiles were to completely exit Formula Virtual at the end of the season, the French manufacturer have now confirmed the rumours to be true. They have been a part of Formula Virtual since 2014 when they entered as an engine tuning partner for Downton, following the British teams split from Pagani after just one season and switch to producing their own engines. This expanded to Mathershaw in mid-2015 when the team switched from Vauxhall tuned Downton engines to having them tuned by DS Automobiles.
Come 2016, the partnership developed further with a title sponsorship and deeper connection for DS and Mathershaw, which eventually evolved into an engine supplier deal for 2019, also incorporating Phoenix. This was cut short when it was announced Mathershaw would switch to Porsche in 2020, however it was announced at the time the French manufacturer would remain in the series with Downton, a decision they have now reversed. 'We regret to inform that we will depart Formula Virtual in every capacity at the end of the season,' a statement released by them started. 'We have had six fantastic years as a part of the series, culminating in our supply of engines to Mathershaw and Phoenix this season. But now, we have taken the decision that our participation must end. We thank all of the teams we have shared this experience with - especially Downton and Mathershaw - and wish them all the best for their future.' No-one from the Downton FV Team was available to comment, but rumours indicate the team have an uncertain future without the support of another manufacturer.
