Bradley Downton has agreed with close friend Robert Mathershaw over how Gerard Alaniz should be punished for his actions during the Australian Grand Prix.
Alaniz blocked leader Adrien Simon for almost an entire lap allowing Simon's teammate Karl Beckenbauer through to take the lead and eventual win. Alaniz then proceeded to swerve across in front of Simon causing a scary accident.
"Undoubtedly Gerard needs to punished for what he did today," Downton commented. "When I initially saw the incident I felt he was guilty of blocking and thought he would get into trouble, but when Robert called for a ban I thought it was a bit much."
"He likened the incident to what happened during the Chinese Grand Prix last year with Karl, when he was crawling along the pit straight and then turned across the track and racing line, collecting Diego and causing a nasty accident."
"I though he was barking at first but when I saw the replay it does appear as though Gerard slowed slightly and then moved across into Adrien's path," Downton added. "This kind of thing has no place in motorsport and I am in agreement with Robert that a ban would be a fitting punishment."
