The tyre regulations for the 2019 Formula Virtual season have finally been confirmed, despite an announcement made of multiple tyre suppliers a month ago. Goodyear will remain as the series sole tyre supplier for the third year running. Next year will see a shake up in the tyre regulations with the addition of two extra slick compounds in a belief that strategies may be made more interesting in 2019. Since 2016, the Super Soft, Soft, Medium, and Hard have been the dry tyre compounds teams could choose from. However the naming system has been scrapped and instead the compounds will follow a numbering system. The confirmed tyre compounds are revealed below. It is believed the names of the compounds have been changed for simplicity, with each dry tyre being named 'S' for slick, followed by the number in durability.
"It has been really tough behind the scenes in the way of the tyre regulations for next year and there has been a lot of back and forth. This I believe is the best decision for the series and races for next year and will provide a more variation in strategies. Like always we always look at things that can be improved and the tyre strategies I've felt can have a bit more put into them as we are starting to see less variations in strategies. I don't expect everyone to be sold on this and I know there were teams hoping for multiple suppliers, and I do understand the paddock may be split as is always the case. At the end of the day it's important to look at what we have now, and what we have is some great racing, so evolution is perhaps better than revolution this time.", said Nic Morley. It is expected that the tyre compounds will be closer in performance next year in an attempt to give teams more of an incentive to experiment with strategies, and with car performance to be closer next year, strategies will play a big part.
